This image has an historically significant photograph as its aesthetic genesis. Herbert Bayer’s 1932, “The Lonely Metropolitan” had a momentous influence on me when I initially engaged in research of early photographic fabrication, which was prevalent in photographic history and especially so in both Dadaist and Surrealist photographic imagery. I believe the issues addressed in his image, primarily that the individual is degraded and turned into just a lonely sensory based entity by the city, are enhanced on a multitude of levels in this image. The thread of male, female roles depicted in media imagery, a common thematic question in my work, are isolated and aggressively heightened, the everyday act of having a drink transforms into a hostile antagonistic urban encounter.
